According to World Bank, in 2018, 59.1 million children were out of school (primary) in the World.
The indicator Children out of school, primary is defined by UNESCO Institute for Statistics as the the number of primary-school-age children not enrolled in primary or secondary school.

We can see an improvement and significant reduction from 1997 to 2007 in the number of children out of school, remaining stable since then.

32.3M Female and 26.8M Male children out of school in 2018.
Significant reduction in gender gap compared with 1970. However, a lot remains to be done to reduce the number of children out of school.

Sub-Saharan Africa continues to be the region with the highest number of children out of school (primary).
